Blogging has quickly become one of the most powerful and popular ways of communicating your message online, spreading news & information, or just having a platform to air your views. There are literally millions of blogs online, but there is always room for one more. It’s a great way to not only share information, but do so with your own personal touch. Here’s a final tip: You can actually make some money doing it!

So, granted there are various platforms online where you can start and maintain a free blog, but I’m big on actually owning the resource by registering, developing and ultimately owning your blog. Trust me, it’s not as complicated as it sounds, and I will show you how exactly how to get up and running, and succeed in being a blogger.

Let’s get cracking:

First things first… decide what topic you want to blog about. This should be easy for you, as by now you probably already have an idea what information you want to share. Tip: Pick a topic you are familiar with, one that comes easy to you and you probably are a bit knowledgeable on. Internet users have become a bit more savvy nowadays and if they pick up that you do not know what you’re talking about, haven’t researched, or simply have no clue on a specific topic, they quickly move on to the next blog.

Get A Blog Developed

Ok, so you’ve decided on the interesting topic you want to blog about. The next obvious step is to equip yourself with the tools to enable you to get your message out there… in other words, get your blog set up. As I mentioned earlier, there are various free solutions and platforms out there that can get you going, but these come with their limitations. The advantages of getting a paid solutions you own are:

  • You get a personalized domain name / web address that you OWN. This can be or whatever you choose to call your blog.
  • Because you own the domain, you can personalize your email address e.g. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., run additional services on your domain etc.
  • There are no limitations in regards to content shared, material etc. It is your blog, so you can pretty much do as you please.
  • You actually fully OWN your blog.

Tip: Pick a catchy, memorable name for your domain. Makes it easier for users to find you and remember how to get to your blog

Start Small

There’s no rush, after all, Rome was not built in a day. Start small, and constantly build up your articles and blog items.

Build Your Audience

The key to a successful blog is the ability to build a large following, and it goes without saying therefore, that to grow that audience, you need to be visible on as many platforms as possible. The beauty of the internet nowadays is that Social Media platforms, online directories, search engines and the likes, have made it easier to target, develop and grow your audience by making your information available across different platforms. Therefore the key to growing that audience and building a successful blog is… SHARE.

Be consistent

Picture this scenario: You have your favorite TV show, you’re accustomed to watching it at a specific time or on a specific day, and all of a sudden you don’t know when it will air, or if it will air at all. Frustrating right? The key to building an audience and a successful blog is consistency. Keep your readers locked onto your blog by consistently providing them with content. After all, they logged onto your blog to read what you have to share right? What’s the point if they cannot consistently get new material to satisfy their appetite?

Be Yourself, Be authentic

Nothing kills a blog faster than material that can be found or has been seen elsewhere. Be it your writing style, imagery, topics… Be original, but most of all, Be yourself. You do not need a fancy style of writing, or the best command of the English language (it does help to check for grammatical errors and typos). At the end of the day, the main purpose of a personal blog, is to give readers the ability to see any topic through your eyes, to be able to see things from your point of view and ultimately get your message across. SO own that space and make it yours.
